Augmenting Life: Art and the Transhuman Imagination
Vortrag von Chiara Juriatti (KU Linz)
Transhumanism, and the artistic practices inspired by it, engage deeply with ideas of symbiosis and interconnectedness. Yet, rather than seeking affinity with the environment, plants, or animals, transhumanist art situates this relationality within a technoscientific framework – one that involves computers, robotics, biomedicine, and artificial intelligence. In this context, life itself becomes the shared denominator that binds all entities together, while technology emerges as the medium through which humans seek to enhance, extend, or even transcend their biological condition.
Such aspirations include the desire to overcome mortality, to cure genetic diseases, or to merge consciousness with the digital realm through concepts like mind uploading. Although these technologies remain largely speculative – hovering between scientific possibility and science fiction – they reveal profound cultural desires: the longing for transformation, control, and continuity beyond the limits of the human body.
Transhumanist art, in turn, reflects and critiques these ambitions. By artistically interpreting future technologies, it exposes the tensions between human vulnerability and technological aspiration, between evolution and self-engineering. It thus becomes a space where the dream of transformation – not of matter, but of the human condition itself – unfolds.
