The beautiful mechanisms of biology, nature, and the universe provide inspiration for our creative and sustainable future. How can we better understand, communicate, and create with nature? Can we build a creative ecosystem where not only humans but also AI and machines learn from nature and create in a more planet-centric way? As an artist and biochemistry researcher, Yoko Shimizu develops innovative technologies and artworks that combine science and art - working with companies, government agencies, museums, and universities around the world. In this presentation, we explore the latest projects on how biological research drives creative innovation in the new era of co-creation, where human activity expands from Earth to space. From living ink that grows freely to a new form of space flight using AI and biology, we look into the future of creative expressions.

The lecture is organised by Ass.-Prof. Dr. Kerstin Borchhardt (Institute of History and Theory of Art) and linked to the workshop Ökologien zum Anfassen – Die New Materialisms zwischen Kunst, Wissenschaft und Religion on April 7, 2022 at KU Linz. For more information see here.
