(Re)Constructing Paradise: Religious and Transcultural Perspectives on Ideal Spaces
Paradise – as a mythical-religious point of origin, an idealized living space, and an eternal object of longing – has long shaped conceptions of ideal space and the good life. Whether religiously motivated or secularly imagined, the idea of a better world finds expression in imagery and architectural visions that go far beyond purely functional or aesthetic concerns.
This lecture series focuses on spatial designs that understand architecture as an expression of social, religious, and political orders – as imagined worlds that create community, represent power, and materialize transcendent ideas of a better world.
The thematic scope ranges from religious images/reconstructions of paradise and contested sacred topographies to secular “counter-sites” and utopian visions. Architectural concepts are examined across different cultural and religious contexts, with a transcultural and transreligious perspective that enables a globally comparative approach.
Following an introduction to historical and current approaches to global architectural historiography, the course explores a range of case studies – from early modern world designs to modern and contemporary imaginations of space, community, and transcendence.
Die (Re)Konstruktion des Paradieses: Religiöse und transkulturelle Perspektiven auf ideale Räume
Das Paradies – als mythisch-religiöser Ursprungsort, idealisierter Lebensraum und ewiger Sehnsuchtsort – durchzieht seit jeher die Vorstellungen vom idealen Raum und guten Leben. Ob religiös überhöht oder säkular entworfen: Die Idee einer besseren Welt manifestiert sich in architektonischen Visionen, die weit über rein funktionale oder gestalterische Aspekte hinausreichen.
Im Fokus der Vorlesung stehen Entwürfe, die Räume als Ausdruck sozialer, religiöser und politischer Ordnungen begreifen – als imaginierte Welten, die Gemeinschaft stiften, Macht repräsentieren und transzendente Vorstellungen materialisieren.
Die thematische Spannweite reicht von religiösen Paradiesbildern und umkämpften Sakraltopografien bis hin zu säkularen „Ersatzorten“ und utopischen Gegenwelten. Dabei werden architektonische Konzepte aus verschiedenen Kulturräumen und Glaubenssystemen betrachtet – mit einem transkulturellen und transreligiösen Zugang, der globale Vergleichsperspektiven eröffnet.
Nach einer Einführung in historische und aktuelle Versuche einer globalen Architekturgeschichte werden historische wie zeitgenössische Fallbeispiele behandelt: von frühneuzeitlichen Weltentwürfen bis hin zu modernen und gegenwärtigen Imaginationen von Raum, Gemeinschaft und Transzendenz.
