Im Vorbeigehen II/19: Monika Drożyńska. DWA / FÜNF
I practice hand embroidery on fabric, which I use as a tool for writing and rewriting. The language I create is like a mongrel. It is mixed with grammar and words that are seemingly incompatible. I like spelling mistakes which I call "versions". Writing a word in several ways is my own version of panta rhei. I write down my scientific research, which I conduct as part of my doctorate in the form of fabric embroidery. In that way, I am introducing a form of writing that never was present before in scientific dissertations. By writing in embroidery, I space out/shoot the masculinity of humanities.

The presentation of Monika Drożyńska’s works at KU Linz focusses on two, partly related topics: The centerpiece is a large format textile work, about 20 meters long, located in the staircase of the new building, which was created especially for this place and the scientific orientation of the university: Pięć [Five]. Like a vertical banner, it reaches from the ceiling down to the cellar and unfolds itself step by step while one climbs the stairs up and down. The hand embroideries thematize the syntactic and typographical peculiarities and their political connotations within the Ukrainian, the German and the Polish language.
The second focus is on pieces from her works Dwa [Two], dealing with the challenges of social distancing, which can be found at different places of both the old and the new building: simple signets communicate with different signs in the house; embroidered and printed textile pieces in the foyer, in the library, and in some lecture halls are connecting Dwa with other contents of meaning; weatherproof flags, attached to windows and arcades as well as to the flagpoles of the terrace, reach into the open air and the urban space.
Accompanying the exhibition, students and lecturers of the private university will have the opportunity to visit up to three workshops, where they will hear about the contexts of Monika Drożyńska’s works, get an insight into embroidery, and even get to design a workpiece themselves – depending on the regulations with more or less corporal distancing.
In cooperation with students from the University of Art and Design in Linz, the process of creating the works, the installations in the indoor and outdoor spaces of the KU Private-University Linz, and the accompanying workshops will be documented on film, presented online, and communicated via social media.

About the Artist
Monika Drożyńska (*1979) lives and works in Krakow, Poland. She is an artist, designer, performer and activist. Drożyńska works mainly with hand-embroidery and fabrics. Content-wise she is interested in languages and linguistic particularities.
She received a number of awards, such as scholarships from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of Poland and the British Council in London.
Currently, Monika Drożyńska is working on her PhD-project at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow.
