Architecture: Power and Representation in cross cultural references

Architecture expresses historical narratives, social concepts, cultural identity, and (national) power constellations. How this works is shown by posters of the seminar Architecture and Power. Political Representations in East and West. Students present international examples from Georgia, Montenegro, Austria and the US.
Dealing with a wide range of building typologies (from sacred architecture to political buildings; from to theaters to hotels) and working in a time frame from medieval times until today, the students demonstrate that architecture is able to communicate different political visions and social agendas.
The seminar, held in the winter term of 2021/22, was an ERASMUS+ funded cooperation of Prof. Dr. Maia Mania, Prof. Dr. Nino Tchogoshvili, and Prof. Dr. Davit Khoshtaria of the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, Georgia, and Prof. Dr. Anna Minta and Ass.-Prof. Dr. Julia Rüdiger of the KU Linz. It was joined by students from Georgia, Montenegro, Austria, and the US.
The course is part of the research focus Urbanity & Sociology of Space (Urbanität & Raumsoziologie) of the Institute of History and Theory of Architecture at KU Linz.
The posters were presented in the Aula of KU Linz and via Zoom on January 28, 2022 (for a summary see here) and are on display in the lobby of KU Linz until the end of the summer term 2022. The exhibition is publicly accessible during the opening hours of the university and in accordance with to the Corona-regulations in place at KU Linz. For more information see here.

Architektur bringt historische Narrative, gesellschaftliche Konzepte, soziokulturelles Selbstverständnis und (nationale) Machtkonstellationen zum Ausdruck. Wie das funktioniert, zeigen die Poster der Studierenden des Seminars Architecture and Power. Political Representations in East and West anhand zahlreicher internationaler Beispiele aus Georgien, Montenegro, Österreich und den USA.
Offensichtlich wird dabei, dass über Epochen und Bauaufgaben (von Sakralarchitektur zu politische Bauten, von Theaterhäusern zu Hotels) hinweg das Medium Architektur in der Lage ist, unterschiedliche politische und gesellschaftliche Visionen und Agenden zu kommunizieren.

Die Lehrveranstaltung steht im Zusammenhang mit dem Forschungsschwerpunkt Urbanität & Raumsoziologie des Instituts für Geschichte und Theorie Architektur der KU Linz.
Die Poster wurden am 28. Jänner 2022 in der Aula der KU Linz bzw. live via Zoom präsentiert und sind bis zum Ende des Sommersemesters 2022 im Foyer der Universität zu besichtigen. Die Ausstellung ist während der Öffnungszeiten der KU Linz und unter Einhaltung der jeweils geltenden Corona-Maßnahmen öffentlich zugänglich. Weitere Informationen dazu finden Sie hier.
