SE / SE-B Die gotische Kathedrale in Mitteleuropa: Architektur, Bildmedien, Liturgie / The Gothic Cathedral in Central Europe: Architecture, Visual Media, Liturgy

As bishops’ seats and prominent venues for courtly and civic representation, the cathedrals formed multifaceted centres of medieval sacred life and belonged to the most elaborate architectural genres of their time. Based on a series of case studies that range from Cologne to Kraków, this course traces the development of the Central European cathedral complex in the High and Late Gothic.

On the one hand, it aims to examine the wide-ranging functions and visual media of each site – from the architectural framework and integral art forms (sculpture, mural painting) to smaller and/or mobile furnishings. On the other, it develops comparative perspectives that cast light on the characteristic interplay of super-regional similarities and site-specific phenomena.

The seminar takes the form of regular classes on campus and a full-day excursion to Vienna (Stephansdom). Classes will be held in blocked form in HS 4 on Tuesday afternoons at 13:30–16:00, on the following days: 7.3., 21.3., 28.3., 18.4., 25.4., 2.5., 9.5., 16.5., and 30.5. Vienna excursion: 23.5.

The seminar will be conducted in German and English. Presentations can be held in either language.

Zur Person
Dr. Tim Juckes (Insitut für Kunstgeschichte, Universität Wien) ist Kunsthistoriker mit Schwerpunkt auf dem Spätmittelalter in Mitteleuropa. In seinem aktuellen Forschungsprojekt, das durch den Österreichischen Wissenschaftsfonds (FWF) gefördert wird, beschäftigt er sich mit visuellen Medien in räumlichen Zusammenhängen. Zu seinen rezenten Publikationen gehören Studien zu Kirchenanlagen in Nürnberg und Wien.
