Department of Art History

ART – We consider art to be a form of both perceiving and representing reality. Our courses explore the diverse manifestations that art embodies, particularly in relation to social, political, cultural and religious contexts.

CONTEMPORARY – Our art history programs focus on modern and contemporary art and architecture from around 1800 to the 21st century. Special attention is given to not only European and Western art, but also to cultural practices from around the globe.

SCHOLARSHIP – We analyse artistic expressions as phenomena of imagination, production, and reception. The variety of analytical methodologies employed combine historical knowledge with theoretical reflections. In pursuing interdisciplinary approaches towards the Arts, Theology and Philosophy are particularly important dialogue partners at KU Linz.
