Our admission office is happy to help you during the application process and with various administrative tasks throughout your studies. Our goal: to make administrative processes as easy and fast as possible for you.

Regular Students

Admission requirements for Regular Students

  • University Entrance Certificate
  • Proof of knowledge of relevant classical languages in accordance with rules and regulations of the KU’s study and exam regulations. If such proof is not available, or the student’s knowledge is not sufficient, then the student must take a supplementary exam offered by the KU
  • Available diplomas and certificates of earlier degrees
  • Birth Certificate
  • Proof of Citizenship
  • Criminal record, no older than 6 months, if school graduation was more than 6 months ago
  • Proof of payment of tuition and Student Union fees (ÖH)
International Students

Admission requirements for International Students

In order to become a regular student at the KU Linz you will need to apply for study admission and submit all required documents. The goal of a regular study is the completion of the degree after successfully completing all exams.

Admission to a study programme is not possible, if you already have a degree in that subject.

International Students

International students have to submit the following documents (translated into German and notarised):

  • Passport
  • Birth certificate
  • University Entrance Certificate
  • Proof of knowledge of relevant classical languages in accordance with rules and regulations of the KU’s study and exam regulations. If such proof is not available, or the student’s knowledge is not sufficient, then the student must take a supplementary exam offered by the KU
  • Available diplomas and certificates of earlier degrees
  • Residence permit for Austria
  • Proof of knowledge of the German language (at least level B2, see below)
  • Curriculum Vitae

Please apply as early as possible so we can guarantee a place of study for you. Please also submit all required documents and forms in time to ensure fast assessment of your application.

After we have checked your documents, but before you will receive a certificate of admission to study, you will have to pay an administrative fee at the amount of €250.00. This amount will be credited to your payment of tuition fees at the start of your first semester

Proof of knowledge of the German language

In order to be admitted to study at the KU Linz you are required to have sufficient knowledge of the German language. You must provide formal proof of your proficiency in German before you begin your studies. Sufficient knowledge of the German language means that you can provide proof of at least level B2 as prescribed by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (in case you can provide only partial verification you will need at least level B2/2). We accept the following exams/diplomas as proof of sufficient knowledge of the German language: Austrian Language Diploma (ÖSD – B2 midlevel German); Goethe Institute (Goethe Certificate B2); Language centre of any Austrian university (B2); Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienwerber/innen (DSH II; German language exam for the access to higher edcuation); Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (Test DaF; German as a foreign language); Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF – B2)

The KU Linz does not offer German classes

Nondegree Students

Admission requirements for Nondegree Students

Nondegree students (‘außerordentlicher Student’) are students who wish to participate in lectures and seminars for a certain time period. They will have to seek admission from the Dean of Studies of the respective programme, and prove that they have sufficient knowledge of the subject. Nondegree students do not have permission to participate in final exams, but they may be eligible to take module exams

Required documents

  • Birth certificate
  • Certificate of citizenship
  • Criminal record, no older than 6 months, if school graduation was more than 6 months ago
  • Proof of payment of tuition and Student Union fees (ÖH)

International Students

In case international students are not eligible to attend Austrian universities (requires 12 to 13 years of school education), they can only be admitted as nondegree students at the KU Linz. In order to demonstrate general eligibility in such cases, students must take supplementary exams. After successfully completing supplementary additional exams, students will receive full degree/regular student status.

Guest Students

Admission requirements for Guest Students

Guest students may be permitted to attend lectures. They must apply with the vice-chancellor’s office and must receive permission from lecturers to attend their modules. In addition they are required to pay a fee at the amount of €125.00. 

Guest students are not allowed to attend lectures with immanent examinations (AG, UE, PS, SE etc.). 

Guest students cannot take exams.

Expiry of Admission

  • At completion of study programme
  • If the student wishes to formally leave the KU Linz and has requested a leave certificate
  • If the student fails to reenrol for more than two consecutive semesters
  • If the student has repeatedly failed an exam and has not managed to pass the exam at the maximum attempts allowed
  • If the student fails to successfully submit course work (e.g. essays)
  • If the student exceeds the maximum time period granted for a degree programme (3x regular study period)
